PHOTOGRAPHER: JUSTIN DE VILLENEUVE

This black and white photo taken by Justin De Villeneuve features American singer and novelist Marsha Hunt during her appearance in the 1968 musical "Hair". The dramatic light and shadow creates an effect where her hair creates a halo around her face, and her expression seems to be caught between several different different emotions. Her work in the London musical propelled her to cultural significance,  and she became the, face of the "Black is Beautiful" movement, known by her iconic afro. The movement focused on a revival of African culture and an appreciation of black beauty, and highlighted artists and cultural icons such as Hunt and Muhammad Ali.
