As a native New Yorker, Hartman was one of the few female Photographers who captured the celebrants of Studio 54, the most famous club in the world. She was one of the very early photographers taking her camera where nobody else wanted to: backstage at fashion shows where the real excitement was.

In this interview, legendary photographer Rose Hartman shares with us behind the scenes of some of the most decisive moments in the history of New York popular culture.

Andy Warhol was one of the regulars at Studio 54 and even had his 50th birthday there. This collection of photographs at Studio 54 by Rose Hartman are some of the most defining images of the late 70’s in New York City. By capturing the most iconic celebrities, in the most iconic of all nightclubs and making this icon-ness palpable forever, Rose contributes to the cultural consciousness and collective mystification of the era.

“Andy Warhol loved to go to Studio 54 and helped publicize it as everyone wanted to talk to him. He barely spoke and would just observe. He also carried a little camera.”

“It was one of the few times that Andy Warhol is speaking to someone else at Studio 54. I was excited to capture the conversation. Jerry Hall was this hugely successful model and growing as an actress.”

One of the most legendary images from the 70’s, this photograph of style-icon Bianca Jagger 30th birthday party at Studio 54 on a white horse depicts the flashy exuberance and excess of the time. It was shot by Rose Hartman 5 days after the iconic’s club opening and was shared broadly in the press, contributing to make Studio 54 possibly the most famous nightclub in the world.

“There were other photographers there that night, but that image was she shot seen round the world and really put Studio on the map.”

“It was Bianca’s birthday at Studio 54. I zeroed in on Mick to capture him. He seems to be completely alone but there was over 300 guests around.”

Speaking about the supermodel Kate Moss. In 1995, Kate Moss is 21. She shot her Calvin Klein campaign the prior year and Just released her own picture book called Kate: The Kate Moss Story with 100 of her pictures. Rose snapped this image in the middle of New York Fashion Week’s craze in Bryant Park, capturing the sweetness and ease that are Kate’s trademark.

This kissing image of Kate Moss and Johnny Depp was shot in 1995. “It was a special event which consisted of photographs of Kate by many photographers at the gallery Danziger. Johnny Depp was there. The kiss happened in one second and might be the only photograph of them kissing.”
