PATTERN PLAY

September 15 - October 03, 2020

I love taking prints, embroidery, appliques - precious things that seem to be from another time- and using them to create a contemporary, new story.

The Selects Gallery is pleased to present “Pattern Play”, a new curation of photographs celebrating the connection between Fashion Pattern and Fashion Photography.

Pattern has been a part of human creativity since the beginning of time. Patterns grace the walls of caves, as parts of rituals. The patterns on stained glass windows and churches, temples, and mosques around the world convey a sense holiness. We wear patterns every day, signals of how we choose to present ourselves to the world. Pattern is not just a fashion statement, but a testament to the innate sense of creativity we all share.  This curation looks at how fashion photographers view pattern as a way of conveying femininity, freedom, and playfulness. The use of pattern is something we all connect and respond to, making these photos uniquely interactive.

Through a mix of personal works and commissioned works the collective exhibition includes works by renowned international photographers such as French Emmanuelle Hauguel and Italian Giovanni Gastel. While Hauguel uses pattern as a playful tool that reveals and hides to reinforce her signature style of genuine sensuality, Gastel uses pattern as composition tool to reinforce the geometry of his images and the importance of backdrop and context.
